• The Blue Brick Ombré Yarns

… are available now in our online store.

    3V8A0121-2

    A few things I wanted to chat about;

    • These yarns are priced slightly higher ($5 CDN to be exact) than my other yarns, owing the the slightly more labour-intensive nature of gradient yarn. I was really hesitant to change prices, but after endless number crunching and efficiency studies I could see no way to escape it. All I can say is that (in my heavily biased opinion) I believe the yarns are worth it, and I hope you’ll agree :)

    3V8A0074

    • These yarns are dyed-to-order. What that means, is that when you order it, I will dye it up especially for you, rather than grab a skein from a pre-existing inventory. Again, this is an efficiency concern, since the yarns do take a different process. There is just one con to this approach, which is that your yarn, from dyeing to delivery, can take up to three weeks. The pros, I believe, outweigh the cons; you can choose whatever base and quantity you like and there is no fear of yarns selling out. If this model works well and makes everyone happy, then I will consider moving the entire Blue Brick yarn line to this model.

    • For those of you who are unfamiliar with gradient yarns, I will be knitting up samples, along with my trusty team of knitters, to show you how they look. I am also writing patterns right now specifically to take advantage of of gradient yarn.
    • For those wondering about photography; the yarns will ship with their respective photo from the images in this post :)

Hope you enjoy, and as always I welcome feedback and questions :) email me at hello@thebluebrick.ca !

  • The Blue Brick Ombré Yarns – Daisy

I saved the loudest one for last :) It’s crazy and bright, and I love it.

    3V8A0106-2

Unapologetic pink, blending into bright yellow/green in a perfect echo of a gerber daisy.

    3V8A0104

The colour deepens to a pinky purple right at the edges.

    3V8A0113

Crazy daisy :) And there you have it, my three new springtime additions to the online store – all of which will be added this Friday :) They’re all dye-to-order, which means you can order any base, and any quantity, without fear of selling out.

  • The Blue Brick Ombré Yarns – Willow

Instalment number 2 of the new colours I’ve developed for my spring Ombré launch! This colour is gentle and neutral, with a beauty all its own; ‘Willow’.

    3V8A0060

Willow graduates slowly from brown, to chestnut, to beige and gray with just a hint of yellow. To answer a question asked yesterday – these yarns are dyed-to-order, and you will be able to order them in any of The Blue Brick’s regular bases- worsted, DK, sock, single-ply merino and even lace.

    3V8A0102

The colours are relaxing and natural.

    3V8A0038

Just like willows :) Tomorrow I’ll release the third colour, and Friday all of these will be in the online store, available for order.

  • The Blue Brick Ombré Yarns – Rose

For weeks I’ve been sharing sneak peeks of my work in developing ombré yarns, and I am delighted to say that I’ve finally achieved a technique that suits my picky personality and allows me to get smooth, lovely, long-run colour changes into the yarn. This Friday, The Blue Brick’s Ombré line will hit our online store! Good news for anyone who has ever been cart-jacked on Etsy; this yarn is dyed-to-order so there will be no shortage.

To launch my new Ombré line, and in keeping with the spirit of the season, I’ve chosen to develop 3 new colours, all inspired by plants and flowers. The first in the series is called ‘Rose’. I chose to base my work off a yellow/orange rose with hints of coral in the outer petals.

    3V8A0039

Hitting the colours was such an enjoyable exercise. I love how they go together!

    3V8A0074-2

For those of you who are unfamiliar with ombré, or gradient, yarns this yarn will transition smoothly as you knit, though all the colours you see in the photo.

    3V8A0086

Rather than areas of colour scattered throughout the knitting, the colours will graduate from one end of the skein to the other. ‘Rose’, along with the other 2 colours in my springtime series, will be available online starting this Friday :)

  • Cove -Available this weekend

    03_March

The March colour way, ‘Cove’ is available for purchase this weekend in our online store, starting tomorrow and ending on Sunday evening. Cove is dyed on our Killarney Sock base – 420 yards of  sturdy-but-soft merino/nylon 80/20 blend. Cove is perfect for shawls, scarves and sweaters, with its muted, earthy tones, fitting for a month where the snow has moved on and spring feels like a promise.

    IMG_6277-1

The March pattern that ships with Cove are the Cove Fingerless Gloves. This pattern is super simple, knitted in the round, for gloves that begin at the mid-forearm. A simple, textural, twisted eyelet pattern is used in a panel across the top.

    IMG_6279

The pattern is perfect for transitional seasons. I can’t wait until the days when I can ditch my winter coat and pair these gloves with a leather, or jean jacket :)

You will be able to order ‘Cove’ this weekend from our new online store. See you there!

  • New online store!

Happy March 1st! Today there is lots to celebrate at The Blue Brick – the opening of our online store, allowing us to move off Etsy and offer things with a little more flexibility (and a much nicer design). Etsy is awesome, but not for everything, and we felt it was time to give our yarn a new home. To celebrate, we’re offering 10% off your entire purchase for the next three days, simply use the code SPRING16 at checkout!

Our Etsy site will continue to operate with my Resin Jewelry book, and knitting pattern sales, but all yarns (and knitting patterns as well) are being moved to the new site at shop.thebluebrick.ca. Rather than once-a-month updates that create frustrating shopping experiences, I will be keeping the store stocked up with as many goodies as I can.

    4

While I have tech’d and test-driven all aspects of the site, there are bound to be kinks for the first few weeks (I’m hoping I just ‘anti-jinxed’ it). I will be smoothing over the details as they arise, but hoping they will be few and far-between.

    2

I’m excited about this new step for The Blue Brick :) Onwards and upwards!

  • March Club Colour – Cove

In Newfoundland, there’s an area called ‘Flatrock’ where I’ve already based one of my colourways. If you turned 180 degrees on the spot and looked the other way, you would see this quintessentially Newfoundland view; a colourful house, perched atop a cliff by the sea.

    Cove

March’s club colour comes from this same place, earthy, rich and tonal.

    IMG_6175

For the base I opted to go with our Killarney Sock; a sturdy blend of nylon and superwash merino, with 420 yards to the skein.

    IMG_6172

The base holds the colour beautifully, and has great stitch definition for the pattern I’m working on; super simple elbow-length fingerless gloves. A perfect transitional accessory for the weeks ahead, when spring still seems far away.

    IMG_6207

Stay tuned to Facebook and the blog for news on when the sale of ‘Cove’ will go live; I’m aiming for the first week of March.

Just a quick recap on how the Blue Brick’s yarn club works:

    • Pattern and yarn are listed together on our Etsy site.
    • You will have 3 days to purchase as many skeins as you like, from just one kit, to a sweaters worth.
    • After those three days are up, I will dye all the yarn to order, get the pattern finalized and tech-edited, and ship out kits
    • Kits will contain the yarn, the photo on a small metallic print and a printed copy of the pattern.
    • The pattern is exclusive to the club for one month, after which is is released to Ravelry
    • Once a club colourway is done, it will no longer be available.

  • Etsy update tomorrow 11am EST :)

Here you go! It’s a small update to our Etsy store, but it contains some awesome goodies:

    IMG_6049

First up; Oregon Cave. This one is my fave, hands down. Oregon-Cave

Wondering how big that cave is? Here’s Tito standing in it.

    3V8A2262

Then there’s ‘Night Heron’. Based off the wing detail of this gorgeous bird. I caught him just as he was taking off, so there is a slight motion blur on the head, but just look at his plumage!

Then there’s ‘Sundown’. Just lovely and soft.

    Sundown

‘Calle San Sebastien’ – off cobblestone streets…

    Calle-De-San-Sebastien

And lastly, ‘Fiesta San Sebastien’ :)

    Fiesta-San-Sebastian

Available bases will include Tobermory Worsted, Escarpment DK and Manitoulin Merino. Sale goes live at 11am EST tomorrow, see you there!

  • Sundown Colours

New colour way, to be added to this Fridays small Etsy update, ‘Sundown’.

Which of us has never grabbed inspiration from a beautiful sunset view? I took this on our last vacation, over the ocean.

    Sundown

There’s a little bit of all things sunset in here; purple, peachy tones, pinks and russets all together in one yummy skein of yarn :)

Etsy update will be this Friday, at 11am EST. I’ll preview all the other colours this week!

  • Etsy Updates :)

Friday February 19th, at 11am EST there will be a small Etsy update featuring a few new yarns that I’ve been working on (hopefully some gradients too, but not making promises there yet!). These two are based off some photos I took during the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián in beautiful Puerto Rico.

The first one is called Calle San Sebastián, and it’s based off a photo I took of the beautiful cobblestone streets in Old San Juan.

    DSCF0351

The yarn that resulted from this lot is a tonal blue, with very subtle variegation. Kinda reminds me of denim :) I love it on our Manitoulin Merino base.

    Calle-San-Sebastian

    DSCF1232

The second new colour is based off an evening photo I took of decorations on someone’s balcony near one of the concert venues. The sky was pink, blue and purple, the houses were dark, and there was this bright line of orange lanterns on the balcony.

    Fiesta-San-Sebastian

The resulting colour is soft and variegated, very serene. I love the little pops of colour that I added to represent the lamps.

    DSCF1250

Keep an eye out for more colours in the next few days :) I’ll make sure to preview them all before Friday so you can plan your shopping!
