Treasure Hunting
ByThe move is officially done, we closed on the condo, and I can finally start to feel settled in the house. I decided to celebrate with a little lunchtime walk, and found this most excellent little antique shop not 10 minutes from my home: Greystone Fine Furniture. Here are my treasures!
Here is the strangest (certainly largest and heaviest) thing: it said ‘sleeve stretcher’ on the tag, but may also be an old ironing board. Weighing in at 30 lbs, the sweet staff didn’t want to let me carry it home, but I’m silly like that. No idea what we’re going to do with it… but it’s so cool! Maybe a shelf?
And just look at these antique sock forms! These are going on the wall in my crafting room, but not with the Kim’s Barn socks because they got stretched to heck just for this photo and I love wearing them too much to relegate them to the ornamental ;)
Ok, here is a sweet find; an antique jewellery cabinet. Do those slots look PERFECT for circular knitting needles? Yes, yes they do.
My last treasure is not really antique, but I’m delighted nonetheless. I’ve got this IKEA dresser in my crafting room that got damaged in the move:
The top got gouged pretty badly… and lets face it. It’s boring. So I bought these goodies:
More photos coming soon to show off how it all turns out! Did I mention I bought it all for a song? I’ll definitely be heading back to the store, it’s perfect for treasure hunting :)
I used to have one of those boards but mine was padded. I used it in sleeves on wool dresses/suits so that I didn’t get a ‘fold’ in the sleeve I didn’t want there. Also, with the padding it was good to ‘steam’ the shoulder area for the same reason, no creases. I think it will make an adorable shelf! I love finds like that. Glad you are in the new home and now can make it all cozy and just right for you and your hubby and furry friends. Have fun. The hardware for the IKEA chest is cool. You certainly have a way with color. I thought perhaps in the first pic you were going to make a yarn in those colors….nice warm blend for fall and winter.

I also inherited a sleeve board like that from my professional dressmaker mother. It is padded as well, but thankfully doesn’t weigh thirty pounds! Very handy for pressing…

Hi Shireen,
Don’t know whether this will find you. Remember me? I’m Ben Hamel’s mom and you and Tito came to visit Jane and me at Coboconk when Ben had his injured leg, in March, or April about four years ago.
I have read your column ever since, watching you grow and grow, and you are two absolutely amazing people! (By the way, I heard a rumour that you two had an absolutely amazing wedding a while back-congratulations!)
I’m writing about your antique purchase. You and the store are both correct- the “arm stretcher” or ironing board is exactly that – a small ironing board for ironing the arms and shoulders in shirts, blouses etc. My mother had one and so did Jane’s- it would be covered with a padded cloth and when slipped over the end, the sleeve was easy to iron without leaving a line anywhere. I used it many times- a very useful item before permanent press arrived!
Are you still doing jewellery? I miss seeing it on your site. I haven’t been confident to order on line, but if you ever come to a craft show near us I’ll be there! There is a large summer craft show in Haliburton which I love.
Congratulations on all your success (and on your new house!) and I wish you both continued success!
Cheers, Anna Lambe (and Jane Abray)

I’m just about to move house and I’m getting so excited about making the space my own and looking for little knick knacks to decorate!

I think the case may have been to showcase commemorative tea spoons. My taunta used to have a collection from trips she’d taken or gifts from guests.
Love your photographs.

The holder looks like a spoon rack that people used to use to hang up decorative spoons like collectible state spoons.
