The Purge – Sending Stash to a Good Home, Suggestions?
ByI’m doing it. I’m Purging the Stash. There is a ton of yarn here that predates my discovery of my one true love – hand dyed merino and alpaca blends. Lots of acrylic, wool, novelty yarns and other things I know I’ll never use. Lots of them are full skeins. I’m looking for a worthy home to donate the yarn to – if you’ve heard of something really worthwhile please post it in the comments!
My only criteria: Lots of folks accept knitted items, but I’m looking for a place that accepts yarn and needles. Toronto area would be nice but I’m not picky ;) Other than that I’m open to ideas!
I work at a church. There is a group of ladies there that meet 2-3 times a month to knit. They range in age from about 75 to 96! Quite a few of them can’t handle the complicated patterns anymore so what they do is knit 12 x 12 squares. One of them sews them together into blankets which they donate to the Mississauga Humane society. They always welcome donations of needles and yarn. I acutally cleared out my stash recently and gave it to them. They are always appreciative. When they don’t receive donations, they still buy the yarn themselves so that they can keep up their donation to the shelter. If you wan’t any more info, let me know!

Saint Luke’s Anglican 1513 DIxie Rd. Mississauga (Across from DIxie Mall).
I’m there and the office is open Tuesday-Thursday 10-2 and Friday 10-1. Or we can arrange a pick up somehow. I think it’s a great group. I even sit and chat with them sometimes and bring my knitting. They are a lovely bunch and I think what they do is great.

My neighbour’s church accepts yarn and needles. They have a group of older ladies that meet every Wed. They knit sweaters, mitts, hats, baby stuff , etc. and sell it at there spring, fall and Christmas bazaars. It’s the St. John the Divine Angican Church, on Scarborough Gold Club Road.

Thank you Chalette! I think I’ll have to divide up that stash into a few different piles! One way to do it would be to send acrylic yarns to people who are planning to knit for other people – because those yarns are ok for folks allergic to wool. Lots of the wool and wool blends can go into a pile intended for the Humane Society ladies!

Some of the pastels could be donated to knit tiny clothes for premmies–I know that a hospital could help you out with this–Guardian Drugs have (had?) a program where you could donate some of your stash. Love that you want to share your wealth.

I recently discovered that I have a yarn “problem” as well. I will be putting mine into color/style sets for sale at an art gallery I work at.
Good luck!
With the yarn, not the addiction of course. :P
